Life's a beach

Life’s a beach

Parr, Martin, 1952- photographer

Now that chilly December is upon us, it’s nice to think that summer is only half a year away……..! And we will soon be sunning ourselves again on Southsea Beach.

Parr has been photographing beaches for many decades, documenting all aspects of them, including close-ups of sunbathers, energetic swimmers caught mid-plunge, and the eternal sandy picnic. This compilation, his first on the topic, presents photos of beachgoers on far-flung shores, including Argentina, Brazil, China, Spain, Italy, Latvia, Japan, the United States, Mexico, Thailand, and of course, the UK.

Martin Parr is a British documentary photographer, photojournalist and photobook collector. He is known for his photographic projects that take an intimate, satirical look at aspects of modern life, in particular documenting the social classes of England, and more broadly the wealth of the Western world.   He has had around 40 solo photobooks published, and has featured in around 80 exhibitions worldwide .

We have around twenty of his photobooks in the library.  Click here to find Life’s a beach in the catalogue.
