Anyone for ice cream?
If the warm weather is making your thoughts turn to ice cream, you are not alone. Since 1984, July in the USA has been National Ice Cream Month month.
Drawing on the enthusiasm of the American public for ice cream, and perhaps in support of what was already a protected national dairy industry, in 1984 President Ronald Reagan signed a proposal to make each July National Ice Cream Month.
1.53 billion gallons (nearly 7 billion litres) of ice cream produced in the USA alone in 2011 (source: IDFA), and according to the International Dairy Foods Association, around 9 per cent of all the milk produced by U.S. dairy farmers is now used to produce ice cream, showing this luxury food market continues to support to the US dairy industry today.
