Urban light pollution

Yesterday’s post brought back a memory of the senior member of staff showing us this kind of image:


and reflecting that his retirement plans meant moving from one of the brightest parts of the map, to one of the blackest.  Presumably, our cosmology department is a bit ‘above’ such things, as it were, but I would guess that one of the greatest hinderances to an interest in astronomy these days is a simple inability to actually see the starts.
