Our Black history

Take a trip back in time and rediscover our institutional Black history with the archival materials display and exhibition on the first floor landing, celebrating the cohort of Nigerian students who completed a teacher training course at the University in the 1950s.

While the colonial motivations behind the British government funding such a programme remain questionable, the training had a hugely beneficial impact on the life of at least one of the students, who went on to teach English, phonetics, and later published books on education, leading to her being recognised by a Nigerian university for her contribution to scholarship.

Come explore the display for yourself this September and all Black History Month 2021.
