Students chatting in cafeIf you have been following this blog post series, you may well have noticed that there were a couple of days without posts.  The simple truth of the matter is that I had so many other things that needed to be done that I did not have time to blog anything.  At times that you cannot do all the things that you believe to be important.  The trick at such times is not to panic but to decide what actually must be done and what would be nice to do but that can be left until later, or not done at all.  Given the formal name in business of “prioritisation”, this is all about accurately identifying what does not have to be done.  You want to end up with as short a list of things you realistically have to do as possible at the end of this process, so be ruthless but fair.  You can consider doing the things that it would be really useful to do after you have finished the very few things that you cannot leave undone.

It is important to know your own limits, and realise that they will be different from everybody else’s.  You will need different amounts of rest, will learn at different rates, and find different things easier or harder than everyone else.  Do not be in a hurry to compare yourself in all things to those around you.  Life is a long distance race, and it certainly doesn’t end at university, any more than it did when you left school, despite the impression your teachers probably gave you beforehand.  This is just one more step along the road of life and you may find your vocation – what you are really good at and want to spend your life doing – after you leave here.  Just live in the moment and take things one step at a time.  And keep in touch with your mates – they are probably having at least as hard a time as you.
