If this then that: your will be done, automatically

IFTTT: if this then thatTwo separate apps designed to work together, “If” and “Do” allow you to get your mobile device to help organise and share things without you having to lift a finger.

If allows you to automate commands passively, so emails can be automatically added to Trello or OneNote, for example.   Do allows you to create action buttons you can tap to execute custom commands from the touch at a button.  Putting the two together, you can make specified events trigger specific actions.

The developers call this process an “if this then that recipe”, which they shorten to IFTTT and pronounce “ift” as in gift.  IFTTT recipes can do almost anything you want using nearly 300 apps  at the time of posting.  Examples include setting up programs to automatically send anything saved to your favourites in Pocket, your iPhone screenshots and all your liked (favourited) tweets all to OneNote, allowing you easily to harvest social media and other web content in real time and collate it in one place for easy handling.  You can create new combinations as you see fit using a point and click interface, as explained in this article, and a small bank of existing recipes are available to download for Microsoft apps.
