I’ve chosen this week’s book to tie in with our trial of the Material ConneXions database: Interior Design Materials and Specifications by Lisa Godsey. This book is designed to help interior designers make good decisions in selecting and specifying materials. It is divided into chapters focusing on design features such as paintings, coatings and wallcoverings or material type such as plastics and metals. There is also a section on acoustics, which is something we are often asked about at the enquiry desk. Each chapter is easily digestible and offers key terms (useful for effective searching on Discovery), objectives, setting out what you will learn, and the information is illustrated with photographs. There are questions for you to consider throughout and a sample specification too.
You may also be interested in these other resources which look at materials and specifications including Construction Information Service which also includes Specify-it, a database of product catalogues, Materia – a website which you can sign up to in order to access the full articles and a really helpful reading list of resources compiled by Stephen Anderson in the School of Architecture. Of course, you can find more books on the Library Catalogue or Discovery.
