Pop-Up Books Open Cabinet Event

popup.jpgI had a very enjoyable few hours yesterday at the open cabinet event in Eldon.  Staff, students and even some alumni came along to explore the library’s varied collection of pop-up books.

Mainly purchased to inspire illustration students, it was encouraging to see graphic design, architecture and fine art students eagerly exploring too.

Some of the books on display explained paper-engineering techniques and those books are now back on the library shelves ready to be borrowed. These can be found at 736.98, on the first floor of the library.

Oliver Tubb, Level 6 Illustration, who curated the exhibition has selected some alternative books to display in the Eldon cabinets, so do come along and have a look if you didn’t make yesterday’s event.  The other books have been returned to their home in the glass cupboard in area 2C (the extra silent study area) in the University Library.

If you wish to have a look at them or borrow them, please ask a member of staff to unlock the cupboard for you.  They are there to enjoy and to inspire your creativity.  See what we’ve got by typing ‘Pop-Up’ into the library catalogue – the first few pages offer useful examples.

  1. Maureen O’Neill also wrote an interesting blog post reflecting on this exhibition that is also worth a look. Maureen’s blog post featured some more close up photographs of some of the books that were on display for anyone interested who did not get to see it ‘live’: http://pompeyillustration.blogspot.co.uk/
