Meat free day on campus

meat production photoNext week is it is Meat Free Week, in support of which, Food on Campus (the University catering service) are having a meat free day today tomorrow (Wednesday, 11 March).

The case for reducing meat consumption, and therefore meat demand and production, is being made both by medical and climate change experts.

Red meat production, causes over 17% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, including some of the most potent greenhouse gases, such as methane. Reducing meat consumption, and therefore production, would therefore help curb global warming, and yet meat production looks set to increase. Excessive red meat consumption is also associated with an increased risk of heart disease and some cancers, and so it is believed that reducing red meat consumption should benefit health. (McMichael, Powles, Butler & Uauy, 2007)

Meat and dairy production account for more greenhouse gas emissions than all forms of transport combined.  Each kilogram of beef requires over 16,000 litres of water to produce, enough to fill 100 bathtubs to overflowing. (Oxfam, 2014)
