Creative Arts Book of the Week 23/01/15

This week I’ve selected A very British Revolution: 150 years of John Lewis by Jonathan Glancey from the new book shelf.  Although purchased by the School of Architecture, this title will be of interest to anyone studying the history of retail, branding and advertising or product design.  The book claims that “the history of John Lewis mirrors that of Britain…”.

Architecture students will find the dedicated chapter on Architecture of particular interest.  It illustrates the 1930’s Peter Jones at Sloan Square – the model of modern department store design, as well as some of the more recent experimental architectural styles, including the new Leicester store designed by Foreign Office Architects.  Family and friends living there were very excited at the opening of the new store in 2008.
