Freegal – Legal Free Music

freegalPortsmouth City Council Library Service is excited to announce that we have launched Freegal- a music streaming and download service. Freegal rhymes with legal, and stands for ‘free and legal’.

What is it?

Freegal offers 3 hours of music streaming a day plus you can download 3 tracks a week in the comfort of your home. The music downloads are in MP3 format, and once downloaded they are yours to keep. There are over a million tracks available, from the latest releases, which you can download on the day of release, to classic rock, jazz, folk, world and classical music. Anyone recorded by Sony will be there, plus a whole host of independent labels. You can also download music videos (each video ‘costs’ 2 downloads and is in MP4 format), but you can’t stream them. Finally, there’s also a free Freegal app.

How you can access:

All you need to access Freegal is a valid Portsmouth Library card and PIN. Staff in any Portsmouth Library will be happy to let you know your PIN if you present your library card and some identification. Alternatively, if you are not already a member just pop in and it’s free and simple to join.

You can find Freegal by going to the ‘What you can borrow or download from libraries’ webpage:

http://www.portsmouth.gov.uk/learning/7851.html

Scroll down to the Music section and follow the Freegal link. On the Freegal page, click on the Login link at the top right. You just login using your library card number and PIN.

Featured acts on Freegal include:

Adele, Jeff Buckley, Johnny Cash,  Daft Punk, Bob Dylan, HAIM, Janis Joplin, Alicia Keys, Olly Murs,  One Direction, Paloma Faith, Shakira, Bruce Springsteen, Justin Timberlake, Pharrell Williams

What else can you access with your Library card?

Portsmouth Library Service introduced an emagazine service – Zinio- in 2013. Some of the featured titles include Classic Rock, Economist, Elle, Ideal Home, Marie Claire, Men’s Fitness, National Geographic, Rolling Stone, Total Film and Woman’s Own. Again, it’s free to use with your library card and you can access it 24/7 from home.

We also offer a range of online reference resources including Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (from home or in the library), Ancestry (in the library) and Times Digital Archive (Central Library).

For more information, go to http://www.portsmouth.gov.uk/learning/7851.html

[Editors note: this is a service provided by Portsmouth Library Services, NOT the University Library. We post it here because we think this will be of interest to our community but the University Library cannot support or answer  questions about this service.]

Thanks to Clare Forsyth, Portsmouth City Council Library Service, for the heads up.
