Yesterday the Library got the go-ahead from University Executive Board for a ground floor project to go ahead this summer. There is still one more hurdle – Finance Committee – but we are hopeful that this will be a formality as we have contained costs from the original proposal which was approved by this committee. We are moving ahead with planning in the meantime as we can’t afford to waste any time now if we are to complete the project on time.
Good news is that the project has been extended to include the permanent conversion of the extra 4 pooled-space seminar rooms into IT rooms (these are currently temporarily converted).
There is a lot of work to do now on the building project itself, service continuity and communications. In addition we need to plan for a shared service desk with IS and also a new staff area in the current IT Room/Short Loan Library areas.
We will start consultation and awareness raising with students in the near future (once we have Finance Committee approval).
This is a good opportunity to update and make better use of our space. Although we will have some horribleness to live through whilst the work is taking place we believe the end result will be well worth the pain.
